Gawker readers think pregnant couple’s poll a pro-life prank

Just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all, BAM! Life screams a new message. A couple who live in Minneapolis are leaving it up to the public to vote to determine whether their child lives or dies. At least that’s what Gawker suggests.

The woman claims she is nearly 20 weeks pregnant—so a decision has to be made soon or she won’t be able to get a legal abortion in her state.

Here’s the justification the woman offered: “The whole point here is to let people have a real way to voice your opinion on the topic of abortion and have it actually make a difference in the real world.  By voting on whether to continue or abort an actual pregnancy, you are doing so much more then [sic] simply telling an elected representative your feelings.  You are actually changing something in the real world.”

The woman also mentions voting from 4chan—I don’t know about that. Seems to me if the 4chan folks got involved, there’d be a lot more votes on her poll. But that’s theory and I can’t prove it either way.

What’s really amazing—the comments the Gawker readers left. Many of them seem to think this is some sort of prank being committed by a couple of pro-lifers. My intuition tells me that isn’t correct, but once again, we’re talking a couple who alleges they’re pregnant but who is encouraging the public to determine whether they abort the baby. We’re talking Gawker which is wildly entertaining but at times seems like another dimension—read the comments on any Gawker story and you’ll get an idea about the community there.

Are they pro-lifers or pro-abortion choicers? Who knows?

The whole pregnancy poll seems like an Internet prank to me.  Consider the title of the website they created—Birth or Not.

I found myself hoping these two didn’t conceive a child, and that it is just some sort of deal where they’re seeking their little moment of fame. Because if they are really carrying a child, that thought is horrifying. Imagine what kind of parents they would be if they are serious about their do-or-die poll. Considering the widespread availability of contraception, it's hard to understand why anyone in the U.S. would be ambivalent about pregnancy, but then again, people aren't always as smart as they should be.

Imagine the outcry if these two were talking about aborting a puppy dog. Be disturbed.

Despite thousands of years of alleged civilization and development, there's still a brazen disregard for life whether it's a baby or a female about to be stoned for adultery. Think PETA will weigh in on the little human animal this mother is allegedly carrying?

Wow! Personally I find this to be a seriously sick & twisted idea even if the couple is just joking and has no desire to follow through if the poll says, "<b>abort</b>...

I can't figure that couple out at all. But if there is a baby, my heart goes out to him or her.
