Florida’s new politics digest lays claim to ‘Headline Headquarters’
Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 8:54AM Because Florida is such a quirky state, aside from the fact it’s the nation’s 4th largest, Sunshine State news often makes it onto the national radar. With that in mind, Todd Jennings created a stop on the Web for his state where a visitor can scan headlines daily and get an overview of what’s likely to be above the fold and in the leads on daily news. Jennings shared a couple reasons with The US Report about why he founded Swamp Spin. [Article continues after photo.]
“Before Swamp Spin,” he said, “I was that guy on Facebook posting every article under the Florida sun with my own pithy take on the headline. Mistakes were made. Friends were lost. Now if my friends don’t want to listen to me, all they have to do is avoid the site.”
There was another factor—like many families, Jennings’ didn’t always agree on the issues. He said his wife “threatened to take meat out of my diet if I didn’t find an outlet for my thoughts.”
Jennings said he majored in nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee; he’s in law school now at the University of Florida. He said he spent 5 years in the US Naval Submarine Forces, serving as “an officer aboard a warship that sinks on purpose.” With characteristic humor Jennings said, “A sign of poor judgment? You decide.”
Swamp Spin is a new endeavor, but he said so far the response has been positive. “From what I gather, a number of conservatives love the site.”
In addition to daily headlines, Swamp Spin features an extensive link directory to media and bloggers. There’s a form for submitting news tips as well. TUSR liked the site so much and in the interest of providing a resource to readers, placed a standing graphic link to Swamp Spin.
Asked if he’s got a lot of hate mail from content at Swamp Spin, Jennings said, “Much to my chagrin, I have yet to receive a large volume of hate mail. I was looking forward to that.”
