Are Democrats disenchanted with progressives’ big government model?
Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 9:17AM Show me a living breathing creature and I will show you a being that by its innate nature seeks freedom just as we seek food, water and shelter. A new Gallup Poll has found that even Democrats whose Party philosophy is wrapped around big government ideas may be falling out of love with the progressive model.
Gallup found:
“Almost half [48 percent] of Democrats now say big government is the biggest threat to the nation, more than say so about big business, and far more than were concerned about big government in March 2009. The 32% of Democrats concerned about big government at that time -- shortly after President Obama took office -- was down significantly from a reading in 2006, when George W. Bush was president.
By contrast, 82% of Republicans and 64% of independents today view big government as the biggest threat, slightly higher percentages than Gallup found in 2009.”
After a political war waged by progressives during Bush 41’s second term, progressives concluded their battle plan by winning the White House. The United States as of Nov., 2008 was put under the absolute control of Democrats. In short order progressives ramped up socialist trends to inject the federal government into the lives of every American with a healthcare takeover.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) led the charge, having gained control of the US Senate and House in November, 2006.
President Barack Obama pushed for a takeover of much of the US auto industry and he even designed a taxpayer funded marketing giveaway to increase sales—Cash for Clunkers. Now used parts for older cars command steeper prices.
The progressive energy policy resting largely on solar and capitulating to the global investment behemoth we call renewable energy has levied higher utility prices on every single American household from poor to rich—trickle down hardship.
Democrats’ de facto open border policy has enabled fraud in US entitlement systems, mortgage lending and identity theft schemes. Aside from that, lower wage workers have been displaced by foreign nationals whose intent may have nothing to do with seeking US citizenship or for that matter abiding by federal law.
As all these policies took root and blossomed, Democrats searched eagerly for a means to increase taxes so they could continue to expand the federal employee rolls Obama fattened considerably.
Author and columnist Dale Dauten once said, “Bureaucracy gives birth to itself and then expects maternity benefits.”
Americans aren’t stupid. As the federal bureaucracy expands, freedom contracts.
The Gallup Poll on big government comes as no surprise.
