Cain, Rove’s ‘talk radio guy’, rises in polls and unveils new site

Herman Cain announced his candidacy in Atlanta on May 21. [Screen shot from TV]Never let it be said that Herman Cain isn’t serious about the US presidency. He’s crisscrossed the United States to meet and greet the grassroots, and most who hear him speak come away impressed. Not a Beltway insider, Cain doesn’t just have to convince Americans on Main Street he’s our best bet. He’s going to have to persuade some Old Guard Republicans.
It appears the OGR might want to take Cain more seriously. The man Karl Rove recently referred to as the “talk radio guy in Atlanta” is rising in the polls.
The Washington Examiner, analyzing a Gallup poll, said Cain is now “virtually tied for third place” among Republican contenders like former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).
Cain hasn’t let up on his efforts, as indicated in part by a new website.
Cain announced his candidacy on May 21 in Atlanta, after he gained momentum as a standout in the Fox News GOP presidential debate. His new website, hermancain.com, expands a previous site by detailing his positions on issues like the economy, national security and immigration among others.
What makes Cain unique is his honesty. After a muddled response on Fox News to Chris Wallace’s question about right to return for Palestinians, Cain told Sean Hannity the question “caught me off guard.”
Wallace asked that question in the aftermath of President Barack Obama’s large gaffe, downplayed by legacy media. Obama told Americans Israel should return to the 1967 borders. It didn’t take long for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu long to set our president straight on that matter.
Cain’s Facebook page numbers continue to rise, now standing at more than 120,000. That jumped from around 69,000 over a week or so ago.
I recently had a long conversation with a lifelong Republican, a person very active in the upper echelons of the Party. I gave my opinion of the different candidates, both announced and likely, and I came right out and said right now, my money is on Cain. I was shocked when this influential Republican who would likely be classified as Old Guard, said, “Mine too.”
Our conversation was casual, but we were talking about who could actually win in 2012 as opposed to who’s polling well among some Republican groups.
Legacy media has described Cain as a Tea Party favorite. I don’t know about that, but I do know Cain was around long before the Tea Party grassroots started to grow. Another thing I know about Cain is perhaps the most important.
Herman Cain has created jobs in the private sector and he’s a Beltway, Old Guard outsider. He knows how to put a team together to achieve success. He has no government baggage—no errant carbon emissions missteps, no government healthcare agenda and no flip flops on conservative policy. Hopefully the Old Guard will give him respect and let Main Street Republicans have a say in choosing our 2012 candidate.
One thing is for certain. A repeat of a candidate like the GOP nominee in 2008 won’t work at all.
I saw a slogan the other day as I read a Facebook thread about Cain. One commenter said, “Yes, we Cain!” Catchy, that. (Commentary by Kay B. Day/May 26, 2011)
