Do illegal votes threaten validity of US elections?

Considering the US southern border operates under a de facto open policy, reports of illegal votes cast in elections come as no surprise to many of us.
Yet Democrats like Sen. Bill Nelson apparently could care less.
When the Florida Legislature passed a law in May to ensure the validity of votes cast in elections, Nelson demanded the Dept. of Justice determine the legality of the bill—the same, DOJ, by the way, that has done nothing serious about matters like the New Black Panther Party’s voter intimidation during 2008.
The Hill reported the results of a study in March in Colorado—as many as 5,000 non-citizens in the state took part in the 2010 midterm election.
Nelson probably didn’t know it, but cautions arose from the federal government about this issue with a General Accountability Office report about ineligible people registering to vote. GAO noted that registration lists were “varied”—status included the registrant self-reporting (assumption of honesty) and on tracking return mailings.
With millions of foreign nationals in the country and an open border permitting more to come in the U.S. whenever they want, a close election could be determined by people who aren’t even eligible to vote.
Democrats appear not to care—the socialist ideology dominating that Party at present is more easily promoted by domination of the uneducated and unskilled.
Nelson’s aggressive move to stop validation of Florida’s vote is extremely troubling. Is this Florida senator truly safeguarding the wellbeing of the people he speaks for in Washington?
Nelson apparently has no idea of the impact of identity theft, an issue closely related to the issue of voter registration.
In 2010 Politico reminded us, “[E]ight of the 19 Sept. 11 hijackers were registered to vote in Virginia or Florida.”
In a recent article in the OC Register (Irvine, Calif.), Jay Ambrose pointed out, “[Y]ou also need an ID to get a beer, back up a credit card or a check, get a job or, for that matter, to get welfare.”
Do illegal votes threaten the validity of US elections? Are we approaching a state where the U.S. will function as a full blown Banana Republic**?

**Wikipedia has a solidly sourced article explaining the concept of the term Banana Republic.

The best way to handle this is for the TEA Party associates to take up posts as poll monitors at EVERY polling space during the election and challenge every "voter" who fits the illegal alien profile or who are know to be illegal aliens.
Also, every absentee ballot must be challenged in a similar fashion.
If the TEA Party people want to make a difference in 2012, this is one primary way they can do so.
