Carbon cops aim at re-engineering humans, zapping Western lifestyle

S. Matthew Liao and his fellow academics suggest taking a pill so you'll be nauseous if you eat a burger.(Photo by Kay B. Day)The carbon cops are at it again, coming up with more ideas to spread the gospel of Pachamama.

Ross Anderson at The Atlantic interviewed a professor of philosophy and bioethics at New York University, S. Matthew Liao. Liao collaborated with two eco-warriors from the United Kingdom, Rebecca Roache and Anders Sandberg, to come up with ideas about engineering human beings in order to, as Anderson put it, ‘combat climate change.’

Ideas in the paper written by the trio of profs include downsizing ourselves—trashing embryos that make big people would be one way. Another idea is to hand out pills that make you throw up if you eat a hamburger or other livestock product. Still another is to manipulate genes to make our eyes more like cats who see better in the dark than humans. Think of all the electricity we could save if we just didn’t need those $50 light bulbs the US Congress helped manufacture with taxpayer dollars!

In Liao’s perfect world we’d all be the size of hobbits (maybe smaller), but you can bet your hockey stick there’d be a power class with carte blanche to produce Goliaths if they so desired. Such is the way of man.

Liao’s politics are in line with organizations like the UN Food and Agriculture Organanization—he cites a paper from the group in his remarks to Andersen.

This isn’t about shared sacrifice. This is about global redistribution of wealth, and the biggest target for people in the anti-carbon cartel is the United States. These self-appointed do-gooders call their goal “social justice.” In truth, this is all about power, the oldest psychological greed on the planet.

Liao told Anderson there might even be a way to “increase…empathetic capacities with drugs…” That way you could persuade yourself to finally write that check to the social justice granddaddy of them all, Oxfam. I kid you not. This professor actually said that.

Oxfam is a political global manipulator in a world where such manipulators are multiplying like roaches—no insult intended to one of the authors of the paper with Liao.

You really have to read this whole paper.

Most of the people writing such papers and obsessing about carbon emissions never entertain the idea of wise use and management of resources. That's called conservation.

Of course in corrupt third world countries, there’s not much wise use of anything, but Liao’s ulterior motive falls in line with making sure everyone on Earth has rights to entitlements from cradle to grave.

Liao and his fellow academics have a dim understanding of personal liberty, one reason every American should hang a copy of the U.S. Constitution and amendments on the wall. That’d be a good reminder that freedom is something that must be guarded on a daily basis whether you’re fighting mad scientists or totalitarians in government.

The first thing I thought of when I read the article in The Atlantic was Josef Mengele, a man who had enough education to call himself a doctor but who was nothing more than a monster with academic creds.

Bloggers at WattsUpWithThat? and well-known physicist Luboš Motl had a field day with the article in The Atlantic.

Motl  had this to say about Liao after a discussion about mental diseases linked to climate alarmism:

“A few days ago, we talked about some mental diseases linked to climate alarmism. Some people argued that OCD was a ‘harmful disease’ for others. But Mr. Liao is clearly sick as well and his disease is extremely dangerous for the people around him. Why were such people allowed to enter Oxford and NYU? They should be kept in Guantanamo.”

Liao should entertain the thought of what many primitive cultures did to appease pagan deities—they just sacrificed the innocent in order to fulfill their goals for power and control. That's a whole lot less expensive than manufacturing pharmaceuticals or producing excess embryos.

I’d suggest  Liao and his fellow authors as well as his fellow anti-emissions totalitarians create an expedition—the first manned expedition to Mars. Think of the carbon emissions (and tax dollars!) we would save. Al Gore would be great as the Capt. Kirk of the expedition. These people are on a high moral plain, right? So self-sacrifice should be something they would willingly embrace.

Think of the possibilities—the Gorians could spread the gospel of Pachamama among little green men on other planets.

Finally, bear in mind this is part of the philosophical core nurturing attacks on Christians and Catholics who believe in the sanctity of life. Even as such Leftists dismiss the faith of others, they are motivated by their own.
