San Diego officials held a press conference about the Aurora gunman suspect identified as James Holmes.

Fox News said the spokesperson was Lt. Andrea Brown with the San Diego Police Dept.

Brown said the family is asking for respect for their privacy. She said they are "fully cooperating" with law enforcement.

Brown also said a statement from the family said, "It's a tragic event; it's taken everyone by surprise."

Brown said Holmes was in Colorado attending school and that he had attended high school in San Diego.

The Associated Press reported Holmes is a medical school dropout.
