Politics of Justice: No hate crime label for alleged shooter at Christian headquarters
Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 12:14PM Right now it’s no secret the U.S Dept. of Justice swings hard Left.
The recent shooting at a Christian group’s headquarters is a perfect example of why our country should never have passed what we loosely call hate crime legislation.
For one thing, we have ample laws on the books regarding murder, rape, assault and property crimes. No victim is more special than another.
The power to determine whether something is a hate crime is so blatantly political, it makes a mockery of justice.
Numerous media reported the alleged shooter, Floyd Lee Corkins II of Virginia, made remarks about political differences at the scene of the shooting, the Family Research Council in Washington.
USA Today said:
“Corkins, who recently been volunteering at a D.C. community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, told the guard words to the effect of, ‘I don't like your politics’ and pulled a handgun from his backpack, according to an FBI affidavit.”
Corkins’ parents made remarks included in the complaint:
Corkins' parents told FBI agents that he has ‘strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner,’ the complaint says.
I have “strong opinions” about Democrats’ class warfare, but I use my brains to deal with those opinions rather than a weapon.
A number of faiths are sharply critical of homosexuality—besides Christians, Muslims and Orthodox Jews, for instance.
If a shooter attacked a Muslim values organization, what do you suppose DOJ would do?
Here are the charges leveled against Corkins:
Corkins, who has been in custody since his arrest soon after the August 15, 2012 shooting, was charged with the federal offense of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, along with the District of Columbia offenses of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
Personally, I don’t agree with some Christian organizations’ social platforms. But when you have an assault on a group purely because of what their faith comprises, you have an assault on freedom everywhere.
Hate crime laws are an affront to liberty and reason. The lack of such charges against Corkins is another in a long line of lapses and failures at the Dept. of Justice President Barack Obama’s appointee Holder is responsible for.
Apparently, for this administration, open season on some Christians is fine.
U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen, Jr., announced the charges; Obama appointed him in 2009.
