Economist’s views on ‘Great Depression’ at RLC raise questions about Obama’s plans

Lawrence Reed, president of the Foundation for Economic Education, delivered a riveting address about the Great Depression during the banquet at the Republican Liberty Caucus national convention.Economist Lawrence W. Reed delivered the keynote address at the Republican Liberty Caucus national convention Saturday during the banquet, and he committed some serious myth-busting about the ‘Great Depression.’ Reed fractured one myth in his opening statements. Most Americans believe corporate America caused the Depression.

"The Federal Reserve system was at the core then—and today,” he said. Reed built a solid argument for the Depression’s causes, and analyzed the economic meltdown that began during President Herbert Hoover’s first term and proceeded to antagonize the global economy for more than two decades. By the end of Reed’s address one conclusion is inescapable: the current administration is following a path very similar to steps taken by administrations in charge during our troubled past.

Thorpe dives into race for US Senate seat, brings listening tour to Jacksonville

Dr. Marion Thorpe was a popular figure at the Republican Liberty Caucus national convention in Jacksonville this weekend.

(Jacksonville, Fla.)—Dr. Marion Thorpe had a hard time breaking away from guests at the Republican Liberty Caucus national convention at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Jacksonville. He’s an easy person to talk to and he knows how to listen. As both a doctor and healthcare administrator, Thorpe brings a unique set of skills to the table where the costliest, most vital issue is healthcare, especially in his home state of Florida. “We can’t fix the economy,” he said, “until we get a grip on healthcare.” As insurance premiums and medical costs skyrocket, that’s a perspective most of us can appreciate. Healthcare costs are an issue for small businesses and for large ones like the big three automakers. Perhaps more than any candidate, Thorpe has solid credentials on this issue. Clinton's half-truth about US role in border violence; ignores DOJ report

God must love politicians because if he didn’t, they’d all have noses that reached to their navels. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton carped about the US role—our “insatiable appetite for drugs”—in the drug wars on the border. Other politicians complained about the US role in supplying weapons to drug cartels. No one of course mentioned the ease of traditionally getting across the border into Mexico. Coincidentally on the same day here in Jacksonville, guns turned up in a locker at a high school in one of our city’s poorer areas. A principal saw a bullet on the floor. At first read, neither of those two incidents seem to be related, but they are and the facts reflect Mrs. Clinton’s half-truth.

Debt and Geithner’s loose lips prompt UN to advance power grab; Ki-moon wants $1 trillion bailout

The UN's opulent headquarters would fetch a good price on the real estate market.UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon wants $1 trillion for “developing countries to….weather the financial crisis.” And a UN panel of economic experts—no one has disclosed the names of all the panelists—wants to abandon the dollar and come up with a new global currency reserve system.

Pop media and the UN will be the death of America if we do not speak up. Now that US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s loose lips about the dollar have bounced around the world, the UN has its eye on every bank account in the world.

The Obama factor: tax hikes as economy tries to correct, record federal spending

President Barack Obama has repeatedly promised tax increases, and he'll keep his word for sure. [Photo of inauguration 2009 by Kay B. Day]Predictions and projections for US citizens

I had a rather darkly humorous moment the other day as I watched a young man purchase a pack of cigarettes. When the clerk told him how much he owed, he said, “What!” As he left, I told him, “Hits me too—I smoke. And for that tax you can thank Obama and the Democrats.”

He looked at me quizzically and said, “Really?”

“Yup,” I said.

If I hadn’t been in a hurry, I’d have said, “Buddy, this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Senate takes up HR 1388 as S.277 Serve America Act; CBO says billions in spending

Updated on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 4:16PM by Registered CommenterKay B. Day, Editor

The bill known as HR 1388 illustrates every problem Americans have with our government. For one thing, no one seems to be able to settle on a title. This bill has been alternately known as the GIVE Act (Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education), the Congressional Commission on Civic Service Act, the National Services Reauthorization Act among others. The Senate’s title at present is the Serve America Act, S.277, as best I can tell. This bill’s purpose is defined as an intent to “reauthorize and reform the national service laws.” The "reform" bill is a largely Democratic Party product. Researching it has been like a comedy of errors and uncertainty wherein "nobody knows nuttin'."

Thieves stole billions from U.S. economy; happened right under lenders’ and Congress’ nose

The FBI has a whole section on mortgage fraud.I frequently mention the impact of fraud on the US economy and I’ve also pointed readers to the Federal Bureau of Investigation website. You can access a US map, click on your state, and read press releases from the different field offices. If the rest of the government were run as well as the FBI we probably wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in today. As it now stands, the government and lenders screwed the economy up and left it to the FBI to clean up their mess. Here are some stats that will blow your mind.
