DeMint calls recovery bill a ‘three trillion dollar mistake’

Sen. Jim DeMint [Photo from US Senate website.](Washington, D. C.)—Despite the carnival atmosphere in Washington at the moment, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) managed to keep his wits intact and he called the Democratic “recovery” aka “stimulus” bill exactly what it is—a “three trillion dollar mistake.” Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) pointed out a troubling fact during a floor speech opposing the bill—“1100 pages not one member of this body has read.” Boehner also reminded House members the bill was not posted online as promised for the public to read it. What does this bill really mean to the American people?

When President Barack Obama signs the stimulus bill in Denver on Tuesday morning, cameras will roll and click. Establishment media will herald the ability of a new president to bring his agenda to fruition and select publications will call the recovery bill “bipartisan.” That is of course complete spin. Not a single Republican in the House and only three in the Senate supported this bill.

Most of us agree a bill was needed. The housing market and auto manufacturing are in dire straits. By the way, we brought those straits on ourselves, collectively speaking. A complete lack of standards in lending whereby welfare payments and student loans were counted as income, and hefty employee packages manufacturers promised union employees years ago are key in the meltdown.

Another key in my opinion was fraud. Easy money means you set yourself up as a target. No one was holding borrowers to tried and true standards. In the name of social engineering so there’s a mortgage in every file box, banks set themselves up as targets by criminal gangs and ordinary thieves. To see what we know this cost, simply visit the FBI website. Read the press releases for different field offices. Banks even tailored loans for Sharia law. Did those loans make up lack of interest by charging some sort of fees? Youc an also have some fun by doing a search with the terms "mortgage fraud." You'll find plenty to read.

Today when the president signs the bill that is nothing more than a political coup to institute government healthcare, to rescind welfare reform and to place a target on the back of every taxpayer in the land, some will rejoice. I won’t watch our country being delivered into the hands of foreign lenders. And I won’t watch as the Democratic Party ensures a socialist framework for a country that until now has enjoyed remarkable freedom.

Government healthcare will fail you, the patient, because there will never be enough resources to provide quality care at reduced rates, and there will never be enough resources to pay for care (and lawsuits) for those in the country without legal documentation. Government will gain control over your body, and services will be rationed depending on your age, your chances for recovery and regulations some bureaucrat wrote.

Welfare always fails the client who depends on it for life.

If the Democratic Party were truly effective, we would not be where we are today. After all, the Democrats have controlled Congress for 43 of the last 55 years. It’s hard to blame anyone else when a political party has exercised that kind of control. Look where it led us.

In a news release at his Senate site, DeMint wrote, “The bill raises the national debt limit to more than $12 trillion, and Congressional Budget Office recently estimated the bill could cost taxpayers over $3.2 trillion over the next ten years if many of the programs do not end after 2010.”

There’s no doubt in my mind a bill was necessary. But this bill is an insult to our intelligence and to our freedom. Washington is a spendthrift and has been for years. Until a leader emerges who is capable of taking a red pen to the federal budget, a truly brave leader who puts ethics above politics and who puts country above party, those of us who work and pay taxes will see more of our dollars headed for the federal kitty. And we will continue to see freedom erode. A Nanny State works like Mother Russia.
