FreedomWorks mobilizes real push to get DeMint, Flake on key committees

One conservative organization is definitely alive and kicking, fresh off successful grassroots efforts on behalf of Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

At the top of the agenda is a mission to impact committee assignments. FW wants Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) on the House Appropriations Committee and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) on the Senate Finance Committee. In a conference call with FW supporters and bloggers on Friday, Chairman Dick Armey urged them to get the word out about two websites, makeitdemint.com and makeitflake.com. At those sites, supporters can sign petitions, get information and make donations. Armey knows tradeoffs between the new president and Congress are bound to happen just as they did with presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton when they took office. Once President Obama takes office, Armey said, “Congress will give him what they want.”

Most expect Democrats to push for a massive economic bailout bill, Card Check to remove privacy from union voting and the long-time liberal goal of nationalized healthcare. Unions will likely also push for nationalized healthcare as a means of lowering costs of their benefits programs. Some leaders in Congress have also suggested they’ll try to bring the Fairness Doctrine back. Removing that doctrine literally saved AM radio stations, and returning it will likely impact an industry already hard-hit by reduced advertising revenues. Many conservatives see the Fairness Doctrine as a threat to freedom of the press stipulated in the U.S. Constitution.

FreedomWorks has approximately 500,000 members who are described as “real activists” at the grassroots level. The organization doesn’t have a narrow focus consisting of liberal bashing. Rather the group seeks to inform the public about key issues and to also motivate Republican leaders to listen and speak up. Armey said Republicans in Congress must “dare to stand up.”

DeMint and Flake are seen as strong fiscal conservatives who are outspoken about pork barrel politics and frivolous government spending. Many media outlets have noted the GOP is in the process of restructuring. Ironically, FreedomWorks is an exception. The organization has long been a voice for fiscal conservatism, responsible government and personal freedom.

FreedomWorks Georgia led a massive ‘Get Out the Vote’ grassroots effort in the Senate runoff race between Saxby Chambliss (R) and Jim Martin (D). Senator Chambliss was reelected by a substantial margin.
