Powell's endorsement of Obama no surprise to McCain supporters
Sunday, October 19, 2008 at 2:17PM Most of us anticipated Gen. Colin Powell endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president; rumors were afloat on the Internet for weeks. As a supporter of Sen. John McCain, I’m not moved by Powell’s endorsement. Powell, like some others, served the government under a different Grand Old Party that exists now. And we appreciate his honorable service.
But the ideological shift within the GOP is the greatest under-reported story of the year. You’d think mass media would have enough brains to see that—the fact that McCain is the party’s nominee says it all. But then, we’re dealing with a biased media, one more focused on vetting a potential GOP first lady than the presidential candidate at the top of the Democratic ticket.
McCain certainly has support from distinguished military—brigadier generals, admirals and all other ranks from bottom to top. Three hundred of them in fact, from all around the country. Powell’s endorsement will get a lot of play from mass media. I don’t think it’ll do a lot for Obama at the ballot box. And despite what you hear daily, this election isn’t over until we actually vote, despite mass media's inclination to name a president ahead of time. Sounds sort of like third world country politics doesn't it?
