We’ll cheer the occasion with cookouts and fireworks. Media and bloggers will talk up some of our nation’s founding documents since there’s a solid paper trail dating to the first whispers of the fight for freedom. If we tucked away a newspaper in observance of July 4, 2009, what events would be committed for posterity?

We could start with the Washington Post’s salon gone bust. Politico reported publisher Katharine Weymouth nixed the big do at her house, where “for as much as $250,000, the Post offered lobbyists and association executives off-the-record access to ‘those powerful few’— Obama administration officials, members of Congress, and even the paper’s own reporters and editors.” As other media outlets and pundits assailed the publisher, they quite naturally missed the boat on the real issue. [Story continued below photo.]

President Calvin Coolidge signs the tax bill that would eventually be called ‘Mellon’s Tax Plan.’ Financier and industrialist Andrew William Mellon was secretary of the treasury from 1921 to 1931, a term of office that spanned the administrations of Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. During his years as secretary of the treasury, taxes and the national debt were substantially reduced. This seeming paradox was effected, in part, by drastic budget cuts. In 1924, Mellon published Taxation: The People's Business, a plan to put more money in the hands of consumers and businessmen by reducing the federal income tax. His proposal bore fruit in the Revenue Acts of 1924, 1926, and 1928. Andrew Mellon is shown at far left in this picture taken Feb. 26, 1926. Others shown are: Senator Simmons, Rep. John Q. Tilson, Rep. John N. Garner, Senator Reed Smoot, Director of the Budget Lord, Rep. William R. That’s pretty brassy, to make the type of guarantee that made her confident enough to accept money. That, by the way, is the real story no one’s looking into.

Are you finally convinced much of major media functions as a de facto arm of the government, having been completely ‘Obamatized?’ Happy Birthday, USA.

Then there’s the matter of the memorial in Los Angeles for the late Michael Jackson at Staples Center. The cash-strapped neoliberal sanctuary city in the cash-strapped state is concerned about costs for security and crowd control. No one can even guess at the size of the pending crowd. Happy Birthday, USA.

North Korea plans to send us some big fireworks in the form of missiles. A header on Drudge asks, ‘Shoot down Nkorea missile?’ Our government says we’re ready to do that if it looks like it threatens us. I say President Barack Obama is not likely to permit it—I figure if he did hear a missile was heading for us, he’d link up first with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel whose power is definitely absolute, and the Democratic equivalent of Karl Rove, Obama guru David Axelrod. Then they’d talk to Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) Then they’d establish a committee to weigh options. The Congressional Budget Office would be charged with cost projections. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) would note the need for more ACORN funding. They might do a preemptive stimulus bill since an attack would interrupt our economy. By the time the Democratic Party process concluded, we’d be picking up Russian missile fragments and registering stray cats to vote. Happy Birthday, USA.

At the moment, the small country of Honduras is standing against the New World Order, following the rule of law to remove a president who acted in conflict with the country’s constitution. Translation: President Manuel Zelaya took a page from the Hugo Chavez et al playbook—re-arranging constitutional law so a leader could run for an extra term if he wanted to. And in the land of liberty, the cradle of freedom, our president and our secretary of state backed leaders in thug world states rather than Hondurans trying to hang onto their own freedoms, giving an entirely new meaning to the chestnut, “Politics make strange bedfellows.”

As I tap out these words, our government seeks virtual ownership of American bodies by attempting to control healthcare, one of the few financial sectors doing well, and the House just passed an energy tax bill that will skyrocket energy costs in your house. Tax-loving Democrats in Congress, euphoric in absolute power, have looked at every possible venue for taxation, including a per miles driven tax, a national sales tax, a tax on employee health benefits, more taxes on cigarettes, and a tax on those filthy rich folks making more than $250,000 a year. From her gravesite, Ayn Rand is probably shaking a finger at voters uninformed enough to re-elect official looters every time the polls open.

We wish this year’s party could’ve been more festive, but we are personally celebrating the fact we have not been personally Obamatized. At least half of our family and friends are celebrating the opposite, glorifying in their Obamatization. Whatever our differences, we join our voices in sincere well wishes. Happy Birthday, USA!
____________________________

The BBC says, “A single mega-colony of ants has colonised much of the world, scientists have discovered.” Lots of these Argentine ants live in Europe, the US and Japan.

Some familial lines are friendly to one another when their paths cross. They like to attack native animals and crops. Worker ants are small, 2-3 mm (1/8”) in length, light to dark brown to almost black in color. When they’ve fed on honey, their abdomens are almost transparent. Argentine ants are the Grim Reapers of the honeybee world, which can mean trouble for farmers and backyard gardeners.

Argentine ant has a smooth (hairless) abdomen. The Florida Dept. of Agriculture said, “For years US beekeepers have been experiencing economic strain because of honey bee habitat loss and the introduction of new pests and diseases. The impact of pests such as the Argentine ant will only add to this burden by increasing operation costs due to additional insecticide treatments and/or moving bee yards.”

Experts believe the Argentine ant hitched a ride to Louisiana from Brazil on coffee ships in 1890. The ant has spread to most of the Southern US where it is definitely considered a nuisance pest.

Australia got their first Argentine Ant visitors 50 years ago. One of the world’s biggest super-colonies formed in Melbourne. A colorfully written article at ABC-Australia likens the ants to the Mafia, lurking underground but wreaking havoc above.

Whatever you’re planning to do tomorrow, you’ll share the day with creatures I figure God invented to remind us humans that despite our dominance, we’re still vulnerable. And if you think about it, there’s a sort of social statement in insects. Mosquitoes don’t see matter in terms of race or skin color, or sexual preference. They just see good hunting grounds. Ants cooperate and die if they must so the colony survives. And now, one, the Argentine ant, stands sublime above all others in terms of population and cultural assimilation.

They could care less what people are all about. And they outnumber us. There’s a lesson in humility there, further evidenced by the necessity of bug spray at any July 4th picnic.

Perhaps if some of these warnings about sticking to the constitution had been addressed to President Zelaya, the Honduran army would still be in the barracks where it belongs.”

Garvin’s commentary delved the same issues I’ve addressed in earlier columns—the global outcry about Honduras’ legal transition of power, peacefully deposing a president by means of Congressional and Supreme Court actions. Only the global outcry didn’t paint the events in those terms. Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez’s remarks appeared in another MH story: “Hours after Zelaya's vow not to heed the Supreme Court's decision, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez complained that 'there is a coup d'etat under way in Honduras,' led by the `retrograde bourgeoisie.' Sidenote: give me the ‘retrograde bourgeoisie’ over a socialist or totalitarian any day.

President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reacted as expected. They lined up with the unions and the retrograde socialists. Clinton condemned the action that led to Zelaya’s removal. US ambassador to the dictator/thug-loving United Nations, Susan Rice, said in Aspen, “We join the march in being clear about standing up when a democratically elected government, whether we like its policies or not, is removed illegally,” she said.

Thus far, every report coming from Honduras suggests the opposite of what Clinton and the Obama administration are spinning. The Supreme Court and Congress of Honduras enabled the former president’s removal. The capital of Tegucigalpa is calm. Of course if Chavez throws enough oil money in the right directions, calm may be upended. Sidenote: Why is it big oil is a dirty word with neoliberals until they’re talking about a socialist’s big oil?

Garvin’s article is the best I’ve found as far as reality goes. Garvin wrote, “First Zelaya scheduled a national vote on a constitutional convention. After the Honduran supreme court ruled that only the country's congress could call such an election, Zelaya ordered the army to help him stage it anyway. (It would be 'non-binding,' he said.) When the head of the armed forces, acting on orders from the supreme court, refused, Zelaya fired him, then led a mob to break into a military base where the ballots were stored.”

Zelaya has a dappled past with the US. He was angered during President George W. Bush’s presidency when the US suspended Honduran visas—applicants could get i.d. documents in Honduras without presenting verifiable information. In May, 2007, President Manuel Zelaya, according to the BBC, “ordered all the country’s TV and radio stations to carry government propaganda for two hours a day.” An article at Inter Press Service (2-22-07) noted Honduras was losing about $2 million a day because of corruption.

Zelaya also hopped into the Chavez queue by leading a push to join ALBA. The former president justified it in remarks to IPS: “…Chavez was willing to supply funds with no conditions or audits.” The same IPS article noted, “[T]he local newspaper El Heraldo published a journalistic investigation revealing receipts for a total of 284,000 dollars allegedly distributed by the government to 38 social and political leaders in exchange for support for ALBA and protests raised in Congress prior to its ratification.”

Like Obama, Zelaya loves unions and community organizations. IPS continued, “The newspaper published a list of people who purportedly received the payments, including Vía Campesina activists, leaders of the Confederation of Honduran Workers (CTH) and other trade unions, members of the leftwing Democratic Union party, and rural leaders.”

Obama should take a page from the Garvin playbook. Honduras is working problems out in keeping with her national sovereignty, her constitution and the branches of her government. Tiny Honduras is in essence standing up against the New World Order. True lovers of freedom should congratulate her.

If our president does choose to jump into the circle with the likes of Chavez, that will simply be one more manifestation that Obama is exactly what he says he is not.

W. Thomas Smith, Jr.The violent crackdown continues in the wake of Iran’s disputed June 12 presidential elections in which – according to The Wall Street Journal – “hard-line clerics have rallied behind Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in supporting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's declared landslide poll victory.”

The flag of Iran contains symbols representative of martyrdom and sovreignty. This flag replaced the Lion and Sun flag that many Iranians in the US still consider valid.Hardly a “victory,” much less a “landslide,” so-say supporters of opposition candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and and Mehdi Karroubi, who have “challenged the vote, alleging widespread vote-rigging.”

Despite restrictions on media, at least 20 people have reportedly been killed and hundreds wounded by Basij militia forces. Some sources suggest the death toll is much higher. And it doesn’t appear as if the mullahs, Ahmadinejad, and their cronies are going to let up until any hint of expressed opposition is crushed.

Additionally, according to the Kuwaiti newspaper Alseyassah, the leadership of Lebanon-based Hizballah is appealing to the Iranian regime – literally the hand that feeds Hizballah – to use all means to quash the opposition movement in Iran. Alseyassah also reports “a number of troops of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps [IRGC] in Kuwait, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria have been recalled to Tehran ... to join the Tha’r Allah [Vengeance of God] forces … These special forces are in charge of protecting the regime."

Saturday, I discussed Iran with Middle East expert Dr. Walid Phares – director of the Future of Terrorism Project for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies – for the initial Q&A in what will be an ongoing series of interviews, Three Questions for Dr. Walid Phares, providing timely perspective on Middle East issues and international terrorism as events unfold.

W. THOMAS SMITH JR.: Considering the large pro-democracy turnouts in recent elections in Lebanon and Iran – and the now seeming desperation on the part of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to quash all dissent – is the IRGC, its Quds force, Hizballah, etc., on the ropes? Does the West now have a strategic opportunity here?

DR. WALID PHARES: The Iranian people have a unique opportunity to liberate themselves from 30-years of oppression embodied by the Vilayet e-Faqih Jihadist regime with its Pasdaran and Basij militias. Such windows of opportunity come only once every one or two decades, and many young Iranians understand this. Hence we have this explosive uprising in the streets of Tehran, and we will continue to see urban opposition for a long time inside Iran.

Moreover, the Lebanese people, who have been under the yoke of Hizballah terror for a quarter century, also have an unexpected opening wherein regional support for Hizballah may be declining inasmuch as Iran's regime may well lose its ability to support Hizballah. Lebanon's Cedars Revolution, which has been under attack for the last four years may also derive tremendous benefit from the youth uprising in Tehran. But even though both civil societies in Iran and Lebanon are looking at a generational opportunity to defeat the terror system in the region, it is really in the hands of the free world and particularly in the hands of the United States to either hasten the advance of democracy or let go of the latter, allowing the Pasdaran to win.

There seems to be an amazing alignment of the planets in favor of pushing back against these terror forces in the region, but Washington will have to say “yes” or “no” to the international push. Iranians and Lebanese can only struggle, but America and other democracies can make it happen soon or in the far future. So, Pasdaran, Quds force and Hizballah aren't on the ropes as you say. But with a quick, serious international alignment of the international community coordinating with the uprising, these militias can be isolated and their terror power significantly reduced. If the West doesn't realize this huge change taking place now out of Tehran and take action, the so-called “Tha’r Allah” forces will become an extremely dangerous tool in the hands of a surviving angry regime.

SMITH: Is there not also an increased danger of an IRGC-inspired attack elsewhere in the world, to divert attention from Thar Allah operations in Iran?

PHARES: Obviously. Strategically, the Iranian regime is bleeding politically. Its credibility is gone, even if it crushes the opposition and pursues the youth across the country. And when such regimes see their political shields shattered, they begin acting irrationally and preemptively. Iran's billions of petrodollars invested in propaganda via satellite TV, as well as the infiltration and influence of Western media have built an unnatural image of the regime camouflaging the oppression. As a result, journalists and academics have described Iran's Khomeinist regime as “reasonable, stable, and with whom democracies can conduct business.” The young men and women on the streets of Tehran have come very close to destroying this expensive public-relations image. Hence, the IRGC could be tasked to strike at targets overseas and engage in terror regionally as a means of deflecting attention from the “Tha’r Allah” operations inside the so-called "republic." The international community in general, Western democracies in particular must be very attentive to the possibility of Pasdaran-guided, ordered and/or inspired terror operations worldwide as the crisis inside Iran persists. Therefore, it is crucial that the West in general and the United States in particular work on backing the democratic uprising in Iran now before the Pasdaran takes them by surprise. This is not an issue of luxurious choice, it is a matter of national security.

SMITH: What is the West failing to understand, that we must get our heads around regarding the IRGC – its subsidiaries like Hizballah – and the “Tha’r Allah” forces?

PHARES: As of the fall of 2006, early 2007, the pro-Iranian-regime lobby in the United States – and some other Western countries – has succeeded in imposing a new equation regarding Iran. Whether it is because of propositions of oil advantages or false promises of help in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is a fact that the Iran policy in the United States has shifted during the last two years of the Bush Administration and throughout the current Obama administration from considering the Iranian regime as a strategic foe supporting terrorism to just a nuisance with which one might cut a deal. U.S. policy has reached a summit of contradictions as its intelligence and legal components consider the Pasdaran and Quds force, as well as Hizballah, as terrorists; yet our political decision-makers look at the Iran of Khamenei as a potential partner in regional political business. The West – particularly the U.S. and the UK – knows all too well that the IRGC and Hizballah are strategic threats but a political decision was made to disregard this reality hoping that it would – or could – end when the “engagement path” would bear fruit. This is a dangerous game, a bet that is irrational, which may cost democracies greater losses and the region's civil societies longer oppression. The Tehran uprising should be viewed as an event of destiny, and it should open Western eyes. Let’s see if Washington and London figure it out and change course or stubbornly continue toward the precipice.

The FDA background statement for the June 29-30 joint meeting in Adelphi (Md.) declared, “Acetaminophen is one of the most commonly used drugs in the United States,1 yet it is also an important cause of serious liver injury.”

A number of issues have been discussed, such as drug interactions between Warfarin and acetaminophen and safe dosages when someone drinks alcohol moderately. [Continues below photo.]

I came to the conclusion early on that if it is possible to do without medication, do so.

However, despite widespread criticism of the pharmaceutical industry, I must say I respect the medical miracles pharmaceuticals have offered us. Patients with AIDS live longer. Breast cancer patients no longer face a death sentence. Diabetes can even, with proper exercise and diet, be controlled.

Conversely, I believe Americans are over-medicated. Our culture doesn’t tolerate pain well and most of us can’t afford missing more than a day or two of work if we have the flu. People want a quick fix for whatever ails so they reach for the little bottle.

Most people tend to take perhaps unintentionally a cavalier approach to over–the-counter and prescription medicine. If it’s legally in the marketplace, a little won’t hurt and a lot may be better. But noncompliance can cost the patient dearly—I’ve often wondered what it costs in healthcare dollars because people don’t take their medicine properly. We already know medication errors in hospitals are very costly.

It’s important for patients to know the often overlooked member of their healthcare team, the pharmacist. That expert is the very best resource for drug information and you should find a pharmacist you’re comfortable with just as you’d find a doctor you like.

Acetaminophen needed a closer look and the marketplace needed more information for the patient.

James Inhofe (R-Okla.) wants an investigation of a report allegedly stymied by the EPA. EPA analyst Alan Carlin submitted data contradicting the agency’s intent to classify carbon dioxide as a pollutant. Carlin is an economist rather than a scientist, but global warming alarmists have also used data from a wide range of experts to make the case for the expensive energy tax bill, also called the American Clean Energy and Security Act or Cap and Trade, passed by the US House.

Fox News said Carlin emailed his agency, declaring his comments “valid, significant” and critical to EPA’s findings. [Story continues below video]

Despite EPA and other alarmist claimants’ statements, hundreds of scientists and other experts, many distinguished in their field, do not agree with calculations promoted by pitchmen like Al Gore. Carlin believes global temperatures have in fact declined over the past 11 years.

A problem for those who disagree with the bill stems from hypocrisy of those promoting the bill. Although President Barack Obama is pushing energy-friendly light bulbs, the administration has not reduced travel or placed limits on lifestyles in the White House. Nor has Congress. Nor has Al Gore, who Inhofe said would not sign a pledge stating he would not exceed the average American household in his own energy use. Many see the double standard as a perfect example of the political class retaining benefits the populace will not enjoy.

Conservatives from both parties see the Energy bill as a convenient means of taxing Americans and funding alternative energy speculators. In an Earth Day interview with Fox News, Inhofe called the scheme an “environmental Enron.”

TUSR does not believe the bill will help the environment at all. We also believe it will be difficult to get communities to accept carbon sequestration—the old ‘Not in my Backyard’ dilemma. Europe has already had problems with that in some neighborhoods. Further, we believe the bill will transfer wealth, from America to developing countries who, due to lack of infrastructure and technology, will be eager to get in on carbon credits and sequestration schemes. Many developing countries are convinced developed countries’ carbon emissions cause hurricanes and other natural disasters, despite millennia of evidence to the contrary.

Little discussion has centered on another facet of the bill—channeling funds to community organizations like ACORN. Section 264 (a) states, “The Secretary of Energy is authorized to make grants to private, nonprofit, mission-driven community development organizations including community development corporations and community development financial institutions to provide financing to businesses and projects that improve energy efficiency; identify and develop alternative, renewable, and distributed energy supplies; provide technical assistance and promote job and business opportunities for low-income residents; and increase energy conservation in low income rural and urban communities.”

The final bill pushed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) was more than 1,200 pages, with 300 pages introduced in the wee hours the day the bill was passed. Waxman hired a speed reader because so few were able to read the entire bill. Many members who voted ‘aye’ are clueless as to the scope and real consumer costs embedded in this bill. TUSR has repeatedly called for putting a stop to members' passing bills they have not even read. We question the legality of such actions. We have listed the names of members of the House who voted for this bill in a previous column.

After submitting his report, Carlin was told to “move on to other issues and subjects…until we see what EPA is going to do with climate.”

[Photo from CIA website.]Honduras, apparently following its constitution, decided to oust existing president Jose Manuel Zelaya for defying a Supreme Court decision. Zelaya hoped to follow the example of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez by holding a referendum that if successful, would have allowed Zelaya to seek a second term. The referendum would have enabled a constitutional assembly whereby Zelaya hoped term limits would be altered.

Chavez has already put his troops on alert. Ecuador and other leftist-led countries are in lock step with Chavez. And naturally, Chavez thinks the US had something to do with the peaceful transition of power achieved quickly and, according to various media, legally.

President Barack Obama issued a statement saying he was “deeply concerned.” Obama said, “As the Organization of American States did on Friday, I call on all political and social actors in Honduras to respect democratic norms, the rule of law and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”

An official statement from Chavez via Prensa, the state-run Venezuelan news service, said, “The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela strongly urges the international community to condemn this situation and urges that the necessary measures be taken by us to defeat this coup d’état in Honduras and to reestablish the legitimate government of President Manuel Zelaya Rosales.”

Secretary of State of the US Hillary Clinton had stronger words. Her statement likely comforts heads of state like Chavez, Fidel Castro and Daniel Ortega. The Wall Street Journal reported Clinton’s comments: “Yesterday she accused Honduras of violating ‘the precepts of the Interamerican Democratic Charter’ and said it ‘should be condemned by all.’"

Every news account states Honduras has followed the constitution to the letter. Zelaya actually challenged the constitution by calling for the referendum himself, and worse, by getting ballots from Venezuela. The Wall Street Journal has the most factual account of the events surrounding Zelaya’s removal and subsequent trip to Costa Rica.

It should come as no surprise the Honduran people want to be free—a desire for freedom is an innate urge in every mobile species. What’s surprising is that an American head of state would defend Zelaya’s dismissal of his own constitution, Congress and Supreme Court. The people of Honduras, armed with their own constitution, are standing against the new world order and coalitions created by people like Chavez. We should be congratulating them for their bravery. Instead, our leaders are stroking egos of people like Chavez and Castro.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.theusreport.com/the-us-report/americans-should-demand-redress-for-climate-legislation-pass.html"><rss:title>Americans should demand redress for climate legislation passed without being read</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.theusreport.com/the-us-report/americans-should-demand-redress-for-climate-legislation-pass.html</rss:link>
Kay B. Media used the case as a rallying cry for gay rights.

In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Holder said hate crimes against “certain groups” like Hispanics are on the rise.

That stands to reason, however, based on Census figures. According to a US Census Bureau news release in 2006, “Hispanics accounted for almost half (1.3 million, or 49 percent) of the national population growth of 2.8 million between July 1, 2004, and July 1, 2005.” There is no way of knowing the socio-cultural breakdown of such a large group. While immigrants come to the US as economic refugees, some immigrants come via drug cartels and weapons smuggling groups.

But Holder also admitted hate crimes are not getting worse. CNN reported, “When pressed, Holder acknowledged he had no hard evidence of trends showing the problem getting worse, nor that states are not prosecuting cases based on their own state hate crimes statutes.”

As President Barack Obama begins to push amnesty for millions in the country illegally, we may ask ourselves if Holder isn’t positioning the federal government to assume power that technically belongs to the states. Does the government anticipate anger over federal amnesty?

The bill Holder wants passed also expands hate crime to include disability, gender and sexual orientation.

Brian W. Walsh, Senior Legal Research Fellow at The Heritage Foundation, also testified Thursday. “The Act’s hate crimes offenses violate constitutional federalism by asserting federal law-enforcement power to police truly local conduct over which the Constitution has reserved sole authority to the 50 states.” The US Report pointed out the constitutional conflict in our column on April 29. Walsh’s complete remarks are posted at the Senate Judiciary website; he builds a logical and sound legal case for not passing the law.

The US Constitution guarantees every American equal rights. Many of us believe any murder is a hate crime regardless of the victim’s nationality, religion or gender. An excellent example is the murder at the Village Market Mall referred to locally as the “Somali Mall”, in Minneapolis. Hassan Mohamed Abdillahi, a 23-year-old from Richfield, killed 21 year old Adan Hassan for revenge. Abdillahi’s cousin had been killed by another man who left the US. So Abdillahi decided to kill one of that man’s friends in revenge.

Yet this crime, a hate crime in every sense of the word, would not be covered by the federal law and would be prosecuted locally.

The states are already under assault from the federal government’s increasing hunger for centralized power. Expanding the hate crimes bill is simply throwing bad legislation after bad. Any murder is a hate crime, regardless of the characteristics of the individual. Hopefully Congress will vote on this law in accordance with the Constitution, ensuring that equal rights are extended to all.
