Sept. 12ers rally against big government as Glenn Beck calls for '56 re-founders'

by Kay B. Day

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) talks with Glenn Beck as hundreds of thousands rally at the nation's capital to protest big government.

Rev. Stephen Broder (right) told Glenn Beck he believes the people have "atewardship responsibility" to protect liberty. Broden, pastor of Fair Park Bible Fellowship, appeared at the Ft. Worth rally.Glenn Beck covered tea parties across the nation Saturday as Americans converged on Washington, [D. C.], Quincy [Ill.],  Ft. Worth [Tex.] and other cities to protest big government spending, tax increases and numerous proposals for healthcare legislation. During an interview with Rev. Stephen Broden of Fair Park Bible Fellowship (Ft. Worth), the clergyman told Beck, “We the people…have a stewardship responsibility.”

Beck also interviewed a number of others appearing at different rallies—Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), Andrew Breitbart and Kevin Jackson were among them. DeMint is an outspoken fiscal conservative. Andrew Breitbart is one of the top media moguls on the Web. Kevin Jackson is author of ‘The Big Black Lie’ and host of the radio show ‘The Black Sphere.’ Asked about minorities, Jackson said, “More and more…are showing up.” Jackson is among a small percentage of black conservatives who believe government policy has harmed the black community. Those conservatives are often singled out for criticism by extreme left wingers.

Like me, Jackson grew up in a family of mostly Democrats. Like mine, his family wasn't rich, and he came to realize policies enacted by presidents like Lyndon B. Johnson damaged the low income community, both black and white, and effects are still felt today. I personally remember when men  began to abandon their low-income families—welfare programs were designed to help single mothers. Johnson’s policies made it more lucrative to be a single mother.

Kevin Jackson, author of 'The Big Black Lie,' hosts The Black Sphere radio show.Jackson wrote at The Black Sphere, “Due to the death of my mother when I was five, I was adopted and raised by my grandparents who were staunch Democrats.  I recall as a child watching Reagan give a speech in his unsuccessful run for the presidency, after which I said to my grandparents, ‘Why are we Democrats, when what we believe is what that guy [Reagan] just said?’” Like Jackson, Reagan’s approach resonated with me.

Many of us believe we are re-living the Johnson years, or worse, the FDR years. Although President Franklin Delano Roosevelt promoted himself as a man devoted to “the people,” his policies harmed the people in many ways. For an excellent analysis of the damage of FDR policies, read Lawrence Reed’s essay Great Myths of the Great Depression at the Foundation for Economic Education.

Talking to Breitbart, Beck thanked him for covering major news stories deliberately ignored by much of branded media—the latest ACORN scandal, the resignation of the Green Czar and even the September 12 rallies hundreds of thousands are attending. Fox News has covered all of them; USA Today also stands out for their coverage. CNN attempted to do a story on South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson’s You lie!’ remark during President Barack Obama’s address to Congress last week.

The CNN reporter’s voice was drowned out by numerous attendees in Washington praising Wilson for calling attention to loopholes in HR 3200 that would permit anyone, legal or not, to benefit from government care. The CNN anchor even made a sly comparison of the protesters to Code Pink, illustrating the great divide between reality and the political class. The people at these rallies provide much of the money for the federal government to operate, via taxes.

Congress has failed to enact a legitimate migrant worker bill to accommodate industries reliant on foreign labor. But those industries often do not pay the workers enough to sustain a living, and virtually none of them provide medical care. Obviously any healthcare legislation must take this under consideration, and HR 3200 does not. Should the government require businesses hiring migrant workers to provide healthcare? Many of us believe they should.

Breaking from the interviews, Beck who describes himself as a Libertarian, called for “56 re-founders… willing to put the nation ahead of themselves and their party.” Beck echoed the opinion of many voters when he said both Democrats and the GOP need a “cleanup.” Beck believes there is rampant corruption in Washington and the government has grown far beyond the boundaries established by The US Constitution.

William Redpath, chairman of the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) commented in a news release, "Make no mistake, the Libertarian Party is opposed to President Obama's health care plans, and his speech last night has not budged us. But we also opposed Republican plans for big-government health care, many of which have been implemented in recent years."

Rev. Broden sees the current political climate as hostile to certain faiths. “What we’re witnessing…a deliberate attempt on the part of the left to replace our Judeo-Christian principles, an attempt to try to replace who we are as a people,” he said.
