Red State Gathering more than a 'bloggers' conference' Pt. 2

Adrenalin on Friday, ahead of Gov. Rick Perry's announcement

Erick Erickson welcomed everyone to the Red State Gathering as the conference began on Friday evening. Erickson is very popular with the grassroots. He is editor at the Red State website and is a familiar presence on TV and radio network political shows. [Photo by Kay B. Day/The US Report]On Friday Erick Erickson welcomed everyone. He introduced Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Governor Rick Scott (R-Fla.) The crowd made their approval clear, with one message resonating: Beat Obama in 2012.

Rep. Scott talked about telling Obama to “hit the road, Jack" and conservative values. A very articulate man who connects easily with others, Scott is a rising star in the GOP.

Red State Gathering much more than a ‘bloggers’ conference’

Pt. 1: Prelude to a declaration for the presidency

View of Marion Sqare Park from the Francis Marion hotel. The park is leased to the City of Charleston by the Washington Light Infantry and the Sumter Guards. One requirement in the lease is that the park stay open as a parade ground. [Photo by Kay B. Day/The US Report]Ahead of the Red State Gathering, I had no idea what to expect. Media often call this a “bloggers’ conference.” Postings at the Red State website suggested a gathering of conservative political activists who either read or post in the diaries at the website.

On NLRB vs. Boeing, the buck stops with Obama

President Barack Obama once again left me speechless on Wednesday as he dodged questions about the National Labor Relations Board’s legal attack on Boeing. Boeing wants to expand its operations in South Carolina, a right-to-work state where unions aren’t shoved down workers’ throats.

The NLRB decided Boeing was retaliating against workers in Washington State where unions are shoved down workers’ throats.

Labor Board attacks jobs creator in Charleston where voters supported Obama

South Carolina’s Holy City, Charleston, is one of my favorite places. You can’t help loving the sight of graceful old homes facing the waves lapping against the Battery. The architecture alone is worth a trip—the 186 foot steeple of St. Michael’s is a symbol of history and grace, and near the base of the pulpit, a mark is still visible from  a shell fired by Union troops during the War Between the States.

Carolinians know Charleston has a leftwing bent, fitting in a city replete with arts festivals and cultural events. In the 2008 General Election, then Sen. Barack Obama definitively beat Sen. John McCain in that county by a comfy margin (82,698 for the Democrat; 69,822 for the Republican). Obama has a peculiar way of thanking those who voted for him, however.

Would Gitmo transfer make Charleston a terrorist target?

An arrow in the recreation yard at Camp Delta, Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, points the direction to Mecca, the Islam holy city, so the detainees know which way to face if the call to prayer sounds while they are outside. Every cell and recreation yard has similar arrows. [Photo by U.S. Army Sgt. Sara Wood, U.S. Dept. of Defense.]South Carolina's state government has learned that it will take an act of the U.S. Congress in order to stop the president from sending Guantanamo detainees to Charleston. Washington has been eyeing the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig since President Barack Obama declared he would close the detention facility popularly known as Gitmo within one year of taking office.

On Monday, S.C. Lt. Governor Andre Bauer (R) requested the state take legal action to prevent a transfer to the Palmetto State. But Attorney General Henry McMaster (R) pointed out, “The U.S. Congress is the branch of government with the jurisdiction and the legal authority to stop the president from making unwise decisions that threaten the security of our nation.” Bauer and McMaster are among candidates seeking a nomination to run for governor on the GOP ticket.

Although the move is still considered to be tentative, Senator Jim DeMint (R) along with Congressmen Gresham Barrett, Joe Wilson, and Henry Brown have sent Obama a letter opposing the transfer to South Carolina. All 3 congressmen are Republicans.
