Ugly truth: Public Project Labor Agreements can freeze out small business

By Wendy N Powell, guest contributor

Gov. Chris Christie at a townhall in Branchburg, N.J. (Photo: N.J. Governor's Office)While we voice concerns about debt and spending, we also need to be mindful of the state of employers, particularly small business and their struggles to remain competitive and viable. Statistically small business—employers of at least 50 percent of our workforce—are struggling, and eager to get your business. They are begging to serve you while balancing unclear taxes, health insurance obligations, uncertain ability to make payroll.

Public project labor agreements (PLAs) provide another hurdle, unless their employees choose to pay union dues.

Here is the ugly truth for small business employers without union workers.

Shades of Coulter's Christie obsession: My ongoing interest in Perry

First in a series of articles about Texas Governor Rick Perry

Texas Governor Rick Perry (screen snip from video, state of Texas)I think I know, sort of know, how Ann Coulter feels about New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Christie endorsed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Coulter’s so energized by Christie that she blurted out an endorsement for former Romney during a recent visit on Hannity on Fox. I almost fell out of my chair when she did that.

Why 2012 is all about Perry

Gov. Rick Perry announced his candidacy in Charleston as an overflow crowd cheered him on. (Photo by Kay B. Day)At the moment we have a president pushing a crony jobs plan while he deals with an illegal weapons/ drug cartels scandal and taxpayer loans to loser corporate supporters. President Barack Obama faces a federal court order to disclose visitors listed on the White House logs—that should produce some interesting findings.

Concurrently the GOP presidential field is in play.

A businessman is rising as a viable candidate despite strategist Karl Rove’s depiction of Herman Cain as that “talk radio guy.”

The GOP also has former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney holding steady.

However the object of media and politico obsession, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, slipped a bit after his late entry sparked impressive poll numbers.

Despite an over-abundance of news potential in all quarters, Perry has commanded headlines right and left. Rarely have I seen a candidate attacked by those within the Republican Party and by cheerleading leftwingers at legacy media.

Obviously Gov. Christie a significant threat to the left

The U.S. may be in the middle of a mortgage quagmire and ACORN may technically be a thing of the past. Or not. Despite having plenty to do, the US Justice Dept. devoted energy and resources to an investigation that’s on par with investigating my hound dog if a few doggie biscuits go missing.

Gov. Chris Christie allegedly went over his travel budget when he was a U.S. attorney. Approximate alleged overage for 23 trips over a 2-year period: $2,000.

When media began to run stories about this matter, many conservative bloggers called the DOJ’s investigation a political move.
