Shades of Coulter's Christie obsession: My ongoing interest in Perry

First in a series of articles about Texas Governor Rick Perry

Texas Governor Rick Perry (screen snip from video, state of Texas)I think I know, sort of know, how Ann Coulter feels about New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Christie endorsed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Coulter’s so energized by Christie that she blurted out an endorsement for former Romney during a recent visit on Hannity on Fox. I almost fell out of my chair when she did that.

Where I part with the right—and legacy media—on Perry

Gov. Rick Perry gained a toehold in the debate in New Hampshire on Tuesday, and after listening to him respond when given a chance, I realized there is a rather sharp divide between many on the right and me.

Reuters and other legacy media are lined up behind the “Where’s the jobs plan?”  meme.  I’ve heard questions about how the GOP candidates would “fix” this economy.

I come close to scorn when I hear this kind of mental collapse.

Cain, Gingrich looking presidential on Face the Nation

Businessman Herman Cain and former Speaker of the US House Newt Gingrich talked with Bob Schieffer on Face the Nation Sunday. Both GOP presidential contenders had spoken at the Values Voter Summit held in Washington during the weekend.

Schieffer began the questioning by asking both candidates what they thought about Gov. Mitt Romney’s faith.

Cain rightly said that issue was “not relevant to this campaign.”

Gingrich answered in a similar vein, quickly dismissing the question.

Putting 2012 in perspective—ignore legacy media

I predicted a long bloody battle ahead of the General Election in 2012. That of course was a no-brainer. Democrats will not go silently into that good night and nor will their friends in big government allied media.

If you expect to get useful information about the GOP presidential candidates, look at their voting records (where applicable) and their accomplishments or failures. Read credible blogs. Look up bills and earmarks the candidate sponsored. Don’t use legacy media as a source.

Why?

Cain garners landslide in national Republican women's straw poll

Breaking News

Herman Cain had a landslide victory this weekend in a presidential straw poll taken at the National Federation of Republican Women's 36th Biennial Convention on Oct. 1. Of the 505 total votes cast, Cain took 48.9 percent of the votes.

Other candidates polled as follows:

Gov. Rick Perry: 14.1

Gov. Mitt Romney: 13.3

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich: 12.5 percent

All the other candidates polled in single digits; 1.8 percent cast an 'undecided vote.'

The women who attend NFRW's convention are party leaders, activists and doers. These women will be a linchpin in the nominee's grassroots and volunteer efforts. That they overwhelmingly support Cain at this point is a message that should not be dismissed lightly.

I am reminded of another long shot candidate Florida's Republican women were successful in helping win office. That would be Sen. Marco Rubio.

Cain’s victory rattles GOP and Dem establishment

Herman Cain's announcement video connects with Main Street. Cain wasn't born with a silver spoon. This screen snip comes from Cain's campaign site where you can see the whole video by clicking on this photo. Cain is shown here with his wife Gloria.Politics can rattle the blogosphere, and a perfect example occurred this past weekend with Herman Cain’s victory in the Florida straw poll. I already have stories up about Presidency 5 held in Orlando.

Republicans not beholding to the establishment in our party were thrilled Cain won. I chatted with some who were at the convention and by all accounts, Cain captured the hearts of the delegates with a fine speech and clearly communicated policies (on retirement funds and his remarkably branded 9-9-9 plan).

Cain has also focused on his own ideas and platform; he hasn't resorted to negative attacks on his fellow Republicans.

There were some disgruntled Republicans who complained that polls don’t matter.

Statement from Herman Cain campaign about Presidency 5 victory in Florida

Official statement from The Herman Cain campaign about his victory in the Presidency 5 Straw Poll in Florida:

This week, Governor Rick Scott pointed out that the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll would go on to win the nomination. He explained that former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, plus 1995 GOP nominee Bob Dole all won Florida straw polls.

"Thank you to the Republican voters for this incredible honor of being named the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll in Florida today," Cain said. "This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored. I will continue to share my message of 'common sense solutions' across this country and look forward to spending more time in Florida, a critical state for both the nomination and the general election."

On Friday evening, Scott Plakon, the Americans for Prosperity- Florida Legislator of the Year who represents the state's 37th district, endorsed Herman Cain in front of more than 1,000 cheering supporters at the Rosen Center in Orlando, Fla. Scott is best known as the sponsor of the Florida Health Care Freedom Act, slated to be Amendment 1 on Florida's 2012 general election ballot.

"I'm proud to support Herman Cain. Our country is suffering right now from bad ideas, bad policies and bad leadership. Herman Cain has the right ideas, the right policies and is a proven business and conservative leader," Scott explained. "Over the last few days at the Orange County Convention Center, I've seen him connect with Florida voters like few candidates I've ever seen. I look forward to working with Herman Cain to see him win Florida and to become the next President of the United States."

In addition to being named the victor of Thursday night's FOX News/ Google/ RPOF Republican presidential candidate debate and the straw poll, Cain spent the entire week in Florida, touring the Sunshine State on his nationwide "Common Sense Solutions Bus Tour," addressing CPAC Florida and speaking at the Presidency 5 festivities.
