Bloggers threaten HuffPo strike as Guild chair says conservatives dealt 'death blow' to middle class

Unpaid bloggers threatening to strike at the Huffington Post got a boost this week when the Newspaper Guild joined the protest. HuffPo founder Arianna Huffington hasn’t blinked—yet—over the threats from bloggers who give away their content in hopes of either advancing a political cause or gaining some sort of left-sphere attention.

Group wants bargaining rights, strike for HuffPo volunteers

The Huffington Post stands as a current model for gaining Web clout. Provide a platform for free blogs, get your SEO game on and send a spokesperson forth to talk shows on CNN to comment on political affairs. You don’t even have to say anything of substance; all that’s necessary is that you cheer for your team.

If the content model is built on solid ground (and gets that search engine love), with solid ground having nothing to do with quality, it’s possible someone like AOL will come along and hand over millions to get the brand as was the case with Arianna Huffington. Surely the head ‘HuffPoer’ will share the wealth with all those volunteer bloggers who helped her in her quest for millions, right?

Waxman says government has ‘to be involved’ to help media: a horror story

During hearings on Cap and Trade in April, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) told former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, "You gotta have some threat sometimes—you have to say to incentivize you, we’re going to give you some assistance, but there are going to be consequences." The exchange illustrated Waxman's disdain for Main Street, in the opinion of some conservatives.[Photo of Waxman screen shot/TUSR.]Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) treads dangerous constitutional waters by declaring “government's going to have to be involved in one way or the other" in order to help struggling media companies. Waxman made that statement, as well as acknowledging such support raises “red flags” when the Federal Trade Commission held a workshop themed on journalism surviving the “Internet Age.”
