Heritage pulls out the stops for GOP foreign policy, national security debate

The Heritage Foundation is pulling out all the stops for Tuesday’s GOP presidential debate on foreign policy and national security. The debate, jointly sponsored with the American Enterprise Institute, is a first for both organizations.

CNN will broadcast it; Wolf Blitzer will moderate.

Thus far, aside from Sen. Jim DeMint’s forum, CNN has arguably done the best job on the debates.

CBS broadcast and cosponsored the first foreign policy debate, but only aired the first hour.

Audience members will get to ask questions at the Heritage-AEI debate and Blitzer will moderate the conversation.

Producers will be watching social media feeds and questions coming in that way may also be selected. Follow at:

Heritage did a video about what it’s like to prepare for a debate. I had no idea how much prep went into one of these presidential debates.

The US Report will watch and Tweet—http://twitter.com/#!/TheUSReport

The debate begins at 8 p.m. (ET) on CNN.

CBS omits key foreign policy and security issues, flubs final half hour of debate

Republican presidential candidates debated foreign policy on Saturday at Wofford College in Spartanburg (S.C.), one of the most scenic areas in the nation. The debate was promoted as a foreign policy debate. However, some key issues went missing, and they are issues that could impact the freedom of every American.

Obama security changes and statements don’t inspire confidence

First Breitbart ran a story with remarks by a top security official who doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. Michael Leiter, head of the National Counterterrorism Center, echoed  remarks by President Barack Obama who didn’t inspire confidence either. The story recounts a passage from a book by Bob Woodward. Obama said, “We can absorb a terrorist attack. We'll do everything we can to prevent it, but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever ... we absorbed it and we are stronger."

Obama admin ignores Arizona governor's repeated requests to secure the border

President Barack Obama’s administration claims to be committed to securing our borders, but officials have ignored multiple requests by a governor to use troops to secure the border.

Since Obama became president, Arizona governor Jan Brewer has sent five separate requests to deploy the state's National Guard to the border – four last year and another on March 29.

Shockingly, none of the governor's letters has allegedly elicited a response from the White House.

A reporter from the Tuscon television news station KGUN attempted to determine why the government isn't listening. Instead of getting answers however, he found obstacles.

TSA Directive leak piques fed curiosity—who’s the leaker?

Updated on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 2:20PM by Registered CommenterKay B. Day, Editor

Commentary by Kay B. Day

The Transportation Security Administration is in a quandary for the second time. In early December, media like Wired reported “sensitive security information” was leaked accidentally. A manual listing screening procedures at airports ended up on the Internet. But after the botched attempt by an alleged Nigerian terrorist on a Northwest Airlines flight to blow up a plane, another TSA leak occurred and this time it wasn’t a mistake.

Two bloggers are now dealing with federal authorities who want to know how they got their hands on a TSA directive soon after it was issued. The directive detailed increased security measures after the Nigerian was caught and the near-blowup was widely publicized.

In the blogosphere, a debate has begun about media peril insurance for bloggers, the strong arm of the federal government and first amendment rights. This debate has been anticipated by anyone who works in media because technology enables anyone who wants to to call himself a writer.

US aims for better benefits, medical care for illegals

Part 1 in a series on immigration
By Kay B. Day

A CBO border patrol agent pats down a suspect prior to returning him to Mexico. Curiously, CBO recently announced that in a case unrelated to this photo, the Brownsville office (Tex.) recently intercepted a shipment of thousands of scorpions and ants.[Photo by Gerald L. Nino, US Customs and Border Protection.]Democrats have garnered votes from advocacy groups who want no restrictions on immigration, and proposals from the Dept. of Homeland Security may somewhat satisfy those advocacy groups and organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union. The Los Angeles Times said DHS secretary Janet Napolitano plans for the department “to create a system to better identify medical and mental health issues and to help manage care.” The Times summed up the approach: “Nonviolent immigrant detainees could be held in converted hotels, nursing homes or placed in electronic ankle bracelets for monitoring as part of a series of reforms planned for the nation's detention system…”

The term ‘illegal immigrants’ confuses Pelosi on healthcare

Updated on Monday, July 27, 2009 at 10:56AM by Registered CommenterKay B. Day, Editor

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested five teens within 24 hours last week for the attempted smuggling of narcotics strapped to their torsos and legs. The CBP noted some teens are US citizens. There’s a telling response in Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) response to a question about what the reporter called ‘illegal immigrants’ during a Real Clear Politics interview. Here’s the exchange:

KING: What about illegal immigrants, what should happen to them if we have national health care reform? Should they be able...
PELOSI: I'm sorry?
KING: Illegal immigrants.
PELOSI: Illegal immigrants?
KING: If you're in this country illegally, should you be able to get health care?
PELOSI: No, illegal immigrants are not covered by this plan.

Pelosi knew just what the interviewer meant—her questions made a subliminal statement. Like other politicos from both parties, Pelosi refuses to uphold laws governing immigration.

The interview continues:
KING: And so what happens to a public hospital then if they walk into the emergency room? Again, the hospital I was at this week, they said, you know, they do 6,000 births a year there and 70 percent of them are for undocumented.
PELOSI: I don't know about that. But I do know that the law requires that if somebody comes in off the street and needs care, that it is extended. What we see in this legislation is that people will have access to affordable health care, and it will diminish the number of people going into those private -- public hospitals in the manner in which you described.
