US HISTORY
"Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle."

Larry M. Wortzel, Ph.D., chairs the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Photo courtesy USCC.A US Government study offers 45 recommendations to Congress, revealing China's shop of global horrors and few positives in the process.

(Washington, D. C.)—China exerts heavy-handed government control over its economy to maintain an export advantage over other countries. Jack Welch gives harsh criticism of U.S. companies during CA World 2008, praises India

Las Vegas at night. (Photo courtesy Official City of Las Vegas website.)(Las Vegas, Nev.)—Jack Welch delivered the keynote address during CA World 2008 at the Venetian Congress Center and Sands Expo in Las Vegas on Monday. Calling blanket layoffs in the U.S. “kneejerk reactions,” Welch said he expects the world economy to recover in late 2009—“The US would come out of its present financial turmoil and that would happen if it seizes opportunities in crisis.”

The Times of India said Welch criticized President George W. Bush for the economic meltdown and praised India:
Welch, a supporter of globalisation, praised India in his interaction. India is a miracle where countless entrepreneurs are constantly innovating and that has brought the "have-nots" into the "haves" league, he said. "The India story is remarkable. This is what globalisation can achieve…"

Brit docs say mobile phone can cause rash on face, ears

(London)—The British Association of Dermatologists says “mobile phone dermatitis” can develop in people who spend long periods of time on their mobile phone. The dermatitis is caused when users develop an allergic reaction to the phone’s nickel surface. In mobile phone dermatitis, the rash would typically occur on the cheek or ear, depending on where the metal part of the phone comes into contact with the skin. In theory it could even occur on the fingers if you spend a lot of time texting on metal menu buttons. BAD said it is worth doctors bearing this condition in mind if they see a patient with a rash on the cheek or ear that cannot otherwise be explained. You can read the whole release at the BAD website.

I’d also add a reminder to not text while you’re driving. How could we foresee the mobile phone becoming a health threat? This is a great example of the beauty of technology, with a beast on Beauty’s heels.

Goodbye journalism, hello rumor and lack of accountability

Networks, websites, newspapers and magazines jumped on the concept of ‘citizen journalism’ eagerly for the same reason shoppers love a 2-for-the-price-of-1 at the grocery store. With budgets strapped, these wannabe reporters could provide content and the media outlet didn’t even have to pay. What’s more, there’s no requisite for validation—the false story CNN ran about Apple’s Steve Jobs came from a first time iReporter who didn’t even have to provide a name, address or anything other than a working email. And the false story affected the stock price of an American company. CNN said the person who submitted the story did so under the name "Johntw." This was the first story filed by that individual. Where is the outrage that should be coming from the industry?

C-Span hub gives you the goodies for presidential debate

C-Span offered a remarkable resource for voters and writers with convention hubs for both major political parties, and the network will do the same thing with the first presidential debate on Friday. The C-Span Debate Hub will not only stream the debate live. Blog and Twitter aggregators will keep viewers up-to-date with analyses and responses. There will even be a keyword tree. Wonder if Sen. Barack Obama’s famous ‘uh, uh, uh,’ or Sen. John McCain’s familiar ‘my friends' will be on the list alongside standards like taxes, service and all those other buzz words politics comprise. The hub will have all sorts of bells and whistles.
